    The Value of Free Public Relations

    If you're like most consumers, you become intrigued by way of a product you see advertised, but you will most likely not buy it and soon you read about it in an editorial column or hear about it on a radio or Television show. check here is the "third-party endorsement" of something by a reporter, columnist or newscaster that provides it credibility and often makes it something consumers need it.

When you are introducing something you think is truly newsworthy, below are a few quick ideas to generating "free" publicity:

    use a title that's intriguing;

    include important information concerning the benefits of your product or service in the first paragraph or two; and

    make sure to include your contact information.

    Send the release to your neighborhood news media- As you read your newspaper, watch your favorite newscast or listen to an area radio talk show, focus on which reporter or newscaster will be the most likely to report on consumer products or conditions that relate with your product offering(s). Then just be sure to send a press release directly to her or his attention.



    Call to follow up- Never assume that as soon as the reporter or newscaster receives your "pitch" it will be reported on immediately. It might take days, weeks as well as months before it gets covered. And it will only get covered if, actually, it's newsworthy. While it is true a reporter often requires a gentle reminder, particularly if a major news event is breaking. Remember - don't pester.



    Don't get discouraged- If one reporter says it isn't the right fit for column or newscast, don't give up. Check to see when there is someone else at the news headlines outlet who would be more appropriate.

    Additional quick reminders about getting free publicity:

    Timeliness is critical- your information needs to be something truly new or quite definitely linked to a hot current topic or trend;

    Make your uniqueness clear- make sure you clarify why your product is actually different from anything else out there, or it will be perceived as more of an "ad" than important news; and

    Offer photos, product samples or background information to make it really possible for a reporter to do the story. Remember, reporters have to find interesting news to report on every day, so the easier you make their job the more likely you'll get the free coverage!
