    If you're like most consumers, you feel intrigued by way of a product you see advertised, but you will most likely not buy it until you read about it within an editorial column or hear about any of it on a radio or Television show. It's the "third-party endorsement" of something by way of a reporter, columnist or newscaster that provides it credibility and frequently makes it something consumers need it.

    That third-party endorsement in a newspaper or magazine column, or on TV or radio is frequently the result of a public relations campaign. In case you are introducing something you think is truly newsworthy, here are a few quick tips to generating "free" publicity:

    include important information about the benefits of your product or service in the initial paragraph or two; and

    be sure you include your contact information.

    Send the release to your neighborhood news media- As you read your newspaper, watch your preferred newscast or pay attention to a local radio talk show, focus on which reporter or newscaster would be the most likely to report on consumer products or conditions that relate with your product offering(s). Then just be sure to send a news release directly to her or his attention.



    Call to check out up- Never assume that as soon as the reporter or newscaster receives your "pitch" it will be reported on immediately. It could take days, weeks and even months before it gets covered. And it'll only get covered if, in fact, it's newsworthy. While it is true that a reporter often needs a gentle reminder, particularly if a significant news event is breaking. Remember - don't pester.



    Don't get discouraged- If one reporter says it's not the right fit for his or her column or newscast, don't quit. Check to see if there is someone else at the news headlines outlet who would become more appropriate.

    A few other quick reminders about getting free publicity:

    Timeliness is critical- your information needs to be something truly new or quite definitely linked to a hot current topic or trend;

    Make your uniqueness clear- make sure to clarify why your product is really different from anything else out there, or it will be regarded as more of an "ad" than important news; and

    Offer photos, product samples or background information to create it really possible for a reporter to do the story. Remember, reporters have to find interesting news to report on every day, therefore the easier you make their job the more likely you'll receive the free coverage!
