    News Opinions and Opinion Journalism

News opinions are articles written to present their writer's viewpoint on an issue and try to persuade readers of it. morning news Although usually produced by journalists, any organization looking to reach a broad audience can publish these pieces. A great News opinion should present both sides of an issue, explain their implications, and offer either support for one side or neutral conclusions; also encourage taking some type of action (e.g. supporting the environment, voting for certain candidates or policies).

Though most news opinions are clearly marked as such, some may not be. This can lead to reader confusion as they might assume they're reading true news reporting when in reality it is just Opinion Journalism - particularly when the latter contains statistics and quotes from experts that seem similar to News Reporting to someone unfamiliar with journalistic verification processes.

One of the key challenges for News editors today is making sure their readers can distinguish between News and Opinion. A survey by the American Press Institute showed that many Americans struggled to distinguish between News and Opinion journalism. morena news Participants in the study were asked to look at 12 statements and classify them either as factual statements or opinion statements, with rigorous testing taking place so as to ensure respondents didn't use this activity as an knowledge quiz or as a way of determining whether a specific statement was factual or not.

The study discovered that respondents could accurately recognize statements as either factual or opinion, although they did not always agree with how each was classified. Respondents with greater political knowledge and digital expertise were better at distinguishing facts from opinions; but even they weren't always successful at doing so.

As a result of these findings, News editors are taking measures to make readers aware of the differences between News and Opinion journalism. One way is clearly marking all opinion pieces with "opinion" written in large letters at the top of each page, while another way is insisting all opinion writers use original reporting techniques; Colleen Nelson of McClatchy/Kansas City Star and national opinion editor insists her writers mimic hard reporting conventions when creating content so it is clear what they're writing isn't just repeating what has already been reported upon.

Teachers can help their students differentiate between News and Opinion by assigning them a research assignment. Students should select two articles from a News source or online newspaper covering a similar subject and read and evaluate both pieces before discussing in class which one represents best examples of News or Opinion Journalism.
