It was in 2001 when the Laguna II, a saloon that was designed to reflect a lifestyle driving, went into production. It was an era of incredible innovation, with a variety of new equipment features which helped customers enjoy their vehicles to the maximum.

The occupants still had to use the keys to open and close their doors. This was a real problem for many and Renault engineers determined to address the issue.

They decided to integrate an electronic contactless card into their vehicles, and develop an application that would allow drivers to open and start their cars by simply hand gestures. The card key is now present in two of three Renault vehicles. The car will automatically unlock when the card is placed near the ignition barrel, or even the central console. The design

The keyless entry system

The hands free card of Renault was a groundbreaking piece of technology when it was first introduced 20 years ago. Its exterior is still the same, but the technology inside has received some improvements to make it more user-friendly and harder to hack.

In the first place, it cannot be used to open the doors or start the engine from outside the vehicle unless it is activated by the driver.
