WEAs can be sent for imminent threats such as tornadoes, flash floods and hurricanes, or other types of severe weather, like a tsunami.

The system was designed to improve the effectiveness of emergency notifications, especially for high-risk groups such as elderly and disabled people, missing persons and the homeless. It can also help keep communities informed about school closures, campus-wide evacuations and other community-level events.
