Clinical psychologists, doctors (psychiatrists or neurologists, family doctors) and clinical social workers are licensed professionals who have been trained to recognize ADHD.During an ADHD evaluation, the doctor or psychologist will sit down with you or your child. They will ask how many years you've experienced symptoms and what problems they have caused in your life. They will employ symptom checklists and other tests specially designed for adults suffering from ADHD. They may also perform a physical exam and brain scans to rule out specific medical conditions that have symptoms that are similar to ADHD for example, thyroid disorders, depression, or sleep apnea.For children, they will typically interview parents or guardian as well as school officials (such as teachers, religious and scout leaders). They also want to see reports or other school documents. These will usually list not only grades, but also teacher comments which could be a sign of ADHD symptoms.
